California pear bloom continues in the state. The bloom for Bartlett pears in the Sacramento area has been long and drawn out. Most trees have bloomed at least twice this year due to the warm and then cold weather we had in the state during the bloom time. There will be at least two distinct crops on the trees this year. Most orchards currently appear to be at the end of their second full bloom period. There are small pears on the trees along with flowers. It is unknown how much of the late bloom will remain on the trees. It is late in the season for this much bloom to be on the trees. If the crop sets and matures as it bloomed this season, the overall harvest will be later then average this year. No one in the industry can accurately predict at this time what will take place or how this crop will get harvested. This is the same thing that happened to other fruit trees in the Valley this year. Unusual weather patterns have affected the timing of fruit production this season.
