California Pear 4-20-2016

4/20/2016  By Dan Winiecke

The California Bartlett pear crop is sizing well in orchards on the Sacramento River. The crop, however, does not look any larger than 2015 at this time. The crop last year in California was the 2nd shortest crop of the past ten years. This followed 2014 which was the shortest crop of that period. Acreage removal, poor weather patterns, and Fire Blight problems have all contributed to less than average crops the past two years. The thinking currently is that the crop in 2016 will not be any larger than the one last year, but fruit quality looks good, and fruit sizing appears to be doing well at this time also.
